A LAN is a local area network. This is the network of pcs, switches, network printers, etc within one subnet. A router would be the network device that interfaces the LAN to the internet. A small office or home's network is a small LAN.
DSL is a Digital Subscriber Link. This is one way a telephone company can deliver high speed Internet. DSL signal is imposed on the same copper wire pair that brings you voice so this makes DSL less costly.
A LAN with a router can interface to the Internet. DSL can be a way (not the only way) to provide Internet service to the LAN. Another common household Internet delivery is cable tv's cable internet servce.
The LAN works on the ethernet standard.
Because LAN and DSL have different purposes they are not in competition and neither is better than the other.

These are totally different items. LAN is a local area network, a connection between machines in the same workgroup. DSL is a digital telephone connection carrying telephone and network signalling on the same cable to provide a high speed connection.
