I was told by both Linksys (router company) and by my CPU manufacturer which is Gateway that i need to re-install my lan card / network adapter / network card because my internet on my desktop is not working. The internet is wor king on my wireless laptop which is using the same router. I need my desktop internet fixed...

Actually, you may be able to fix it yourself.. Open the control panel and go to System.. Click the Hardware Tab.. then click Device Manager.

Find the network adapters..
Just delete the one that says ethernet adapter.
(Dont worry it will not damage anything or hurt the computer.)

Then SHUTDOWN the machine. Restart the system.
On restart the system will find your adapter and will re-install the drivers. (Gateway has a driver file on the machine so it should just find and install the correct adapter.)

Then click restart (just for good measure) on reboot chances are good your card will be working again!

If not you can get help tomorrow or get another card if needed.

Be sure that the cable you are using to connect to the router with is a straight through cable and not a crossover one. Both ends should be in the same "color" pattern when looking at the wires.

go buy a network card and slap that puppy in there and load the drivers.
it's that simple.
if you just can't bring yourself to do it, look at your local craigs list site and in the computer section there should be people offering to fix computers.
