If I have a device programmed with a static ip address in the proper network range, what happens when I plug this device into the network? Is there some low level communication that occurs between the device and the router that makes the router aware of the device? If not, how does the router direct packets to this device?

I am planning on getting my first laptop very soon. My problem is that my xp desktop awile back I changed some settings. I got all worried about security and disabled netbios. Now I know where to enable it back, but I could have sworn I did this change through the registry.

My question is will this setting being disabled prevent my laptop from obtaining a connection through the router I plan to get. Do I need to change it back on the XP desktop (netbios)?

The laptop will be running Vista. Just don't want any troubles if I can help it. What are some of the things I may need netbios enabled for?

Hello,

I've had a wireless network at home for the past 3 years and it has worked perfectly.

Recently, a neighbor installed his and it's conflicting with mine. My laptop doesn't automatically connect to my network, instead it tries to connect to his. I think the problem is his network is closer to the room I'm trying to connect from.

My network is located in the downstairs office, and I'm trying to connect from my room; my neighbor's network is in his room, which is closer to my room in terms of distance.

I already tried to set up windows to only connect to my preferred network but it only works when I'm closer to the router.

How can I fix this without having to move my wireless network?

Does anyone have any experience with this type of card for broadband connection?

My understanding is that you just need to buy the card, install it and provided you get a signal you can access the internet?

I am using Singapore's - Singtel ISP

1. Example if I want to change my Siemens Speedstream 4100 DSL modem to an ADSL modem(eg D-link model). Do I need to make some settings like entering my IP address in the D-link ADSL modem or what...so i can surf the net?

2. My Siemens Speedstream 4100 DSL modem can't be portforward(maybe using a semi-crippled firmware) as it only can surf the net. If I want to portforward, what can I do?
Is it to buy a router and set my siemens dsl modem to bridge mode then it will work OR some other suggestions?

hi, have anyone encountered a (virus?) problem when 1 time you are connected to the network then the following day, using the same settings, you suddenly can not surf the net?

I have a user in our network who was suddenly disconnected but the network icon is ok. I have tried using another IP, used different network cables and tried on a different port just to isolate the problem. But whatever I do, the connection will just last for about 3 secs then be disconnected (though the network icon is still indicating that I am still connected) when i ping our gateway.

I also tried to scan the system just to make sure no virus or any malware has infected it. I also visited the registry and tried HiJackThis for possible infection but it seems that no virus has infected the system but due to the symptoms, I believe otherwise.

Can someone pls help me resolve this problem? I encountered the same problem last month, I just reformatted the system. Is there a way to get the system goi

I have a Windows XP PC connected to the internet thru a Linksys wireless router. I have set up the router to work just fine, giving internet access to both the PC and the Vista notebook.

The notebook is connected to the PC and I can view files, access printers, etc from the notebook. I am unable to see the notebook from the PC. McAfee can see the notebook and monitor it's status. I've checked to make sure the workgroup names are the same for both computers, but something is missing somewhere. Laptop can ping the PC, but PC cannot ping the laptop.
Help if you can.

I use a lot of adobe premiere and photoshop. I need to create a folder with a lot of free space so that my computer wont crash or slow down on me. This way my big file space taking video and picture projects can be saved to this drive or folder.

One more thing- I am also trying to link this drive/ folder to my computer. Any way to do this? If not then that is fine too. Thanks!
