It will connect at 54 mbps and then drop to 18 mbps or 11 mbps right away. Is there any way to correct this?

Your signal is dropping because of signal degredation from the router to your card. You have alot of RF interference in your area or you are to far away from the router to get a good signal. Try moving closer to the router to see if that corrects the problem. If it does then you dont have a equipment malfunction
