I recently acquired a laptop from a sibling, and it's worked great until a few weeks ago when I found I could no longer connect to the internet. By digging around, I found that my IP address is "invalid". I tried refreshing it, manually resetting it, and using command prompt to renew, but all I found was that I am unable to contact my DHCP. Help?!?
Also, I'm a technical dunce and my networking was all set up without my questionable input, so I have no idea what router I have, or where to look to find out. Can anyone walk me through without needing to spend hours on a phone waiting for tech support?

We have a wireless network, but there is no coverage in certain parts of the building. We have BT Broadband, with a BT voyager modem & router. I thought it was possible to get a receiver/repeater (I don't know if they exist or what they are called) and put them in certain parts of the builing to expand the network. Does this exist?
Is this a good idea? and
Where can I buy such a thing?
Thanks a lot!

I have too modems, I have files on one modem I was to transfer to my other computer, I don't want to have to use a disk, if there a way to maybe put a USB cord (or anything else) into both of them and just send the files from one to the other?

I'm starting to hate having to switch over computers when I want to do certain things.

Thanks!

Hi
My HP Pvilion zt3000, running XP Home edition sometimes fails to connect to the router, which is also a local DHCP server.
It ALWAYS gets an IP (for example: 192.168.0.11) from the router (whose IP is: 192.168.0.1) but once in a while fails to access it.
The command: ping 192.168.0.1 fails!
Later, when the machine is rebooted - things are ok!
I had compared the output of "route print" when the router was unreachable and after rebooting, when the router had become accesible - but the output looks just the same.
Could some of you recommend on the next steps (except for formatting the harddrive and switching to Linux.....)?

Thanks for your help.

I'm working on a friend's older desktop with PCI NIC, video card and a USB card. It's an older computer and my friend has never used the NIC. When he does plug the network cable in it establishes a connection (attempts to obtain an IP address through DHCP) but then errors saying "network cable unplugged". It cycles through this a few times and then the computer completely freezes. I've tried updating the NIC driver, switching cards in slots and assigning a static IP, all with no luck

Any thoughts as to a solution are appreciated.

I have a wireles hp 2700 printer and have set up a network to it and prints/scans etc fine. then i have a US Robotics 9110 router to connect to adsl. networked with it fine and can connect to net fine. if i open Wireless Network Connections to see all the connections it shows the printer and the router as seperate things. If i want to print then i have to disconnect from the router and connect to the printer network. then to go on net i have to reconnect to it again. surely i can connect to both at once??

I'm looking for a well linux supported wireless card. I need/want it to run under Puppy Linux, and primarily Knoppix-STD (Security Tools Distrobution). It also needs to support monitor mode because I want to use it with kismet, airsnort, and other network tools. Puppy Linux should not be a problem, because I could use ndiswrapper to make it work and I would only be using it for standard surfing, but Knoppix-STD is a whole new can of worms. Has anybody had good experience with a wireless card on Knoppix-STD?

I'm searching for a J2EE compatible software for factory PLC's, and we all know the software from the hardware manufacturers is not very good. They all seem to use propriatary data systems that don't communicate with anything else, and are nearly impossible to program. Those OPC systems use the DCOM, and that is impossible to use. Is there anything out there that isn't impossible to use?

The wireless connection has worked fine and no problem connecting to any sites at first. Now the wireless connection can't find www.yahoo.com. But no other problems?
