I recently acquired a laptop from a sibling, and it's worked great until a few weeks ago when I found I could no longer connect to the internet. By digging around, I found that my IP address is "invalid". I tried refreshing it, manually resetting it, and using command prompt to renew, but all I found was that I am unable to contact my DHCP. Help?!?
Also, I'm a technical dunce and my networking was all set up without my questionable input, so I have no idea what router I have, or where to look to find out. Can anyone walk me through without needing to spend hours on a phone waiting for tech support?

need more info on your network. are you hard wired to a hub, etc. or using wireless? the brand name of the router has to be on it somewhere check the bottom it should have the manufactures name, model # ,MAC address and H/W and F/W versions.

Turn off your computer. Reset the modem (hold the reset button on the back for 45 seconds.) Reset your router (if you have one.) Turn the computer back on. Everything should now work fine. If it doesn't, you could try re-installing your LAN drivers.

tough one.

i'd trace the cables to find out which router is connected to the network and go from there.

First I would do this. Open an dos prompt and type
Ping 127.0.0.1 this will tell you if your adapter is working.
