Hi
My HP Pvilion zt3000, running XP Home edition sometimes fails to connect to the router, which is also a local DHCP server.
It ALWAYS gets an IP (for example: 192.168.0.11) from the router (whose IP is: 192.168.0.1) but once in a while fails to access it.
The command: ping 192.168.0.1 fails!
Later, when the machine is rebooted - things are ok!
I had compared the output of "route print" when the router was unreachable and after rebooting, when the router had become accesible - but the output looks just the same.
Could some of you recommend on the next steps (except for formatting the harddrive and switching to Linux.....)?

Thanks for your help.
Shay

Update the Router firmware first. Restart everything see how that goes.
If that still acts dodgy, update the Network card.
Do an ipconfig, and see where your network address is coming from; it should be coming from your ISP, if not something is wrong in settings, and you may need to reset the router, or I should say reconfigure, however a reset may not hurt, especially if everything else is working fine.

Are you utilising a crossover cable to connect the two desktops? you need to use a crossover cable to without postpone connect 2 desktops. The 169.254.x.x IP area is stated as APIPA or automatic inner maximum I P Addressing. in case you do not have a DHCP server, your laptop will assign itself an APIPA handle. while you're utilising ICS, you will desire to get an IP handle from the laptop with 2 NICs in it. yet you will no longer get an IP handle while you're utilising a right this moment by using cable.

.
I recommend that you update your NIC driver.
If that does not solve the issue, get a new NIC Network Interface Card.
A NIC is hardware, and hardware does fail.

A. Update the NIC driver
1. You can Go to your device’s manufacturer site online and download the most current driver to a folder on your desktop. It should be free from them.
a. To determine the manufacturer
look in your Device Manager section.
b. Go to START > RIGHT click MyComputer >
select PROPERTIES >
c. tab for HARDWARE > click button for Device Manager
d. In Device Manager, scroll down to your device, double click and get the name of the manufacturer.
e. Go online to the manufacturer site > find DRIVERS
f. Download the driver you need.

2. Go to your desktop, find the driver, double click and INSTALL the driver.

3. Restart your computer > it will "see" the new driver and may ask you if you want to use it
instead of the one you have...say YES.

B. If you want to replace the NIC try ebay for NIC bargains.

With a DHCP error, i would first, automatically, get myself a new router, or modem. If those didn't work, i would probably troubleshoot the network card. Now, i dont know if it is wireless or not, but make sure things are not obstructing the view.
