i am going to get sky broadband and i'm wondering about that^ because the phone line socket is on the ground floor and my pc on the first floor. no other pc to share connection with right now but might get a laptop in the future.

No you do not need to connect the Wireless router to a PC for it to work. You will want to connect it directly for the initial router configuration. Once you have the router configured, you will no longer need to have a PC connected to it, unless you want to edit the configuration.

i am not sure how broadband connects but i just went with cable and i had to connect my computer to the cable modem which is connected by a cable from the tv. but i went wireless to the computer on the second floor (through a router)

The wireless router recieves and transmits data between your PC and the Internet. It is the mediator. It is one of the components of a wireless network. So yes you need it.

you can use long ethernet wire for the connection. however it will look ugly to lay on the floor. wireless is a better choice.

not really but you do have a little distance problem. if you plan to get more than one computer I would recommend a router though.
