I have had BT Broadband for many years now and this has been an on off problem for the last 18 months or more. For no apparent reason, when the phone rings or someone calls out, my internet connection drops out. This happens randomely and with no obvious trigger. This lasts for a few days to a few weeks then dissappears again and doesn't happen for months. I've been in contact with BT on numerous occassions only to be given no real help or answers at all (surprise! surprise!). They seem very reluctant to send an engineer to investigate.
I've tried all the usual things to fix it myself like, changed the microfilters, disconnect other equipment from the phone lines, replaced the phones and even changed the master phone socket in the house. When I got the BT home hub end of last year I thought the problem had gone for good but no. Tonight it started doing it again. I will contact BT and insist on an engineer visit but just wondered if anyone else had similar problems.

I bought a new desktop system and put it on the desk where my old laptop was. I didn't move the router (it's sitting on the desk next to me) but my new machine shows "low" signal strength. I am currently using an ethernet connection or wouldn't be able to get online at all.

I'm not good with comupters but I have a router modem (if it's called that) it's plugged into my desktop computer. But does it have to be left plugged into my computer for it to be accesible on other wireless computers in the house? I want to take this desktop computer upstairs but there is no land line upstairs, so can I just leave the router modem downstairs plugged into the landline without it being plugged into a computer at the same time? I have a wireless thingy that you plug into the desktop for when its taken upstairs.

Does anyone know if there is a significant difference between Cat-5 and Cat-6 cables for my modem? Does that one extra wire really warrant going out and replacing my cureent Cat-5? Know of any websites that explain the performance upgrade in mubers (if any)?

alright before you even start reading this don't give me a stupid response like "dur dur dur dur get DSL/Cable" or some junk like that if it was available out here I would have it its not so I can't.
Heres the problem: couple days ago it rained pretty hard nothin out of the ordinary though. My dial-up speed has normally been anywhere between 45.5 kbps to 49.2 kbps and its held between those numbers for well over a year, now out of no where it has drastically dropped down to 24 kbps (which is what im currently on now and I had to fight with it to get it there) I am now normally connecting around 14.crap kbps now I know this has nothing to do with server congestion/time of day etc. because of the fact that this has never happened and what like 900 billion people decided to buy a computers yesterday and all decided to go w/ dial-up to slow me down? That is not likely. If anyone can help me out here and get back up to my 45.5 kbps it would be most appreciated. I'm open to suggestions

Yeah, I'm actually asking for how to hack into the network and be an administrator so I can use my Ipod at work, since I can't use it at home on my broken-down computer.

I'm not gonna do anything bad, I just want to download one itsy bitsy program then go back to being the little peon that I know I am in the eyes of my boss.

Anyone know how?

Hi I have a 3Gb file that transfers from one of our Dell servers through a 1Gb ethernet switch to a Cisco 3800 router over a 45Mbps DS-3 connection, to a Cisco 3700 router to a 100Mbps switch to another Dell Server. The transfer takes over 3 hours, which equates to around 1.5Mbps throughput (correct me if I'm wrong on the speed.)

I've checked all connections & none have errors or other obvious problems. Ping response times are relatively fast over all network connections. The sysadmin is using just the normal xcopy in a script to tranfer the files..he believes the problem is possibly with a bottleneck in the network (transitioning over multiple speed connections) but I think the problem may be with the protocol or with the servers. I should get at least 10Mbps xfer speed, right?

Any ideas on what to check next? Is there a better utility or command that can be scripted to run automatically? Is there a good/free utility to check file transfer speeds between two machines?

I can save files on this shared disk, but i can't delete them or change them. If delete them, and refresh the folder, they pop up again. It appears as if the file is "read only" but it is not marked like that in properties.

I am using Internet Connection Sharing with my computer and I have already connected to Xbox Live once. When I was trying to apply the update for the console, it lost the connection. Now I can't reconnect and when I test the connection, it always says that the IP Address test fails. I can not figure out why. I've gone to Microsoft and am waiting on an answer from them. In the mean time, I want to see if anyone can help me out. My email address is alexmjack@yahoo.com. If you need anymore information , I will be happy to tell you. Thanks
