I have had BT Broadband for many years now and this has been an on off problem for the last 18 months or more. For no apparent reason, when the phone rings or someone calls out, my internet connection drops out. This happens randomely and with no obvious trigger. This lasts for a few days to a few weeks then dissappears again and doesn't happen for months. I've been in contact with BT on numerous occassions only to be given no real help or answers at all (surprise! surprise!). They seem very reluctant to send an engineer to investigate.
I've tried all the usual things to fix it myself like, changed the microfilters, disconnect other equipment from the phone lines, replaced the phones and even changed the master phone socket in the house. When I got the BT home hub end of last year I thought the problem had gone for good but no. Tonight it started doing it again. I will contact BT and insist on an engineer visit but just wondered if anyone else had similar problems.

I have a filter on every phone and any equipment hooked up to the phone line like Sky box. I have never changed the set up at all so why does it work okay for months then start to play up when nothing has changed?

This won't cure your problem, but as a matter of interest I heard this from a telecomms engineer.
Apparently, if you're right on the edge of the working radius from the exchange for broadband (it used to be 5km, I don't know what it is now), sometimes the line just can't quite cope with the extra load of the landline as well as the broadband, so the broadband drops out as it's more "sensitive", so to speak. When they test the line they'll say it's fine, which it is - for landline.
You need to speak to the broadband people, not BT faults. It's a different "company" in effect, and they have more clout with the engineers.

I'd hate to sound like BT (and I know this will)
But to check everything is rigged up correctly and to isolate the cause you really should have one filter, one fone, one pc for at least a little while to see if it happens.
Get BT to do a line check (even though they'll probably say everythings fine)
After you have done all this and the problem is still occurring, get an engineer out.
Only this way can you be sure not to end up with a big bill for their engineer when he says it is your fault.
Also, are you wireless, have you tried the ethernet connection?
does it drop out on both.
My BT hub misbehaved for a few weeks and after I complained (loudly) and they said there was nothing wrong, it mysteriously became fixed.

If it is only happening sporadically, why do you assume it is BTs fault. Even if an engineer came out to look at it, he would say the line is fine and in good working order etc. Couldn't it be some other conflict in your PC related to your DSL. I think Colin M is on the right lines. When I first ever installed my PC, as a complete beginner, everytime I printed something I lost my internet connection. I lived with it patiently for ages then when I had to replace the HD it all got corrected quite naturally.

I have the very same problems you are having. I had the drop in connection for weeks at a time last year, then for no apparent reason it stopped happening. I have had no issues for nearly 8 months, then suddenly, since upgrading to 8 meg, the connection drops out on recieving or making a call again.
I have made no changes to my setup, I haven't installled the BT home hub as we already have our own Netgear router.
This is so annoying, and I agree, BT support is awful.

As above, if you've checked everything possible and BT still refuse to send an engineer tell them you will change providers, if everyone who was having problems did this they would soon pull their finger out. If you do change, give Telewest a try, i have been using them for about 3 years and never had a problem.

make sure you have your filters connected to every phone socket in the house, and if your telephone is a cordless you will need to move it as far away from the hub as poss, cos it could cause interference, failing that ring up bt and moan. good luck
