My PC that is hard wired is fine. The laptop doesn't even detect the wireless signal and it is sitting next to the router. The router is a Linsksys wireless-G 2.4GHZ model WRT54G ver6. The laptop is a Compaq.

this may sound stupid, but do you have a wireless card in the laptop; and if so, what version of 802.11 does it use? An 802.11a card will not even notice the /g router (different frequencies)

If it works with a cable, it must be a wireless related problem. Any
other wireless networks or 2.4Ghz transmitters nearby (cordless
phones, microwave ovens, video cameras.). Any other wireless
computers nearby that you can use to check the Linksys router? Any other access points (wireless hot spots) nearby that you can use to check the laptop. If it's a wireless problem, it's first necessary to determine if it's the Linksys or the laptop that has the problem.

I have another stupid one but this happened to me - make sure the laptop's wifi card is enabled in your BIOS. Press F10 (with some computers it is F1, F2 or the Fn key) when your computer is booting up to see the bios options.

You may also have a hardware switch on the outside of your laptop case that needs to be switched to on. If the problem is either of these, Windows will have no idea and will report that your wifi card is working just fine.
