I'm not good with comupters but I have a router modem (if it's called that) it's plugged into my desktop computer. But does it have to be left plugged into my computer for it to be accesible on other wireless computers in the house? I want to take this desktop computer upstairs but there is no land line upstairs, so can I just leave the router modem downstairs plugged into the landline without it being plugged into a computer at the same time? I have a wireless thingy that you plug into the desktop for when its taken upstairs.

You have an adsl modem router which is also known as a gateway. Therefore you are indeed able to leave the wireless modem router downstairs, take your computer upstairs & plug your usb wireless adapter into the computer's USB port which will then receive the signal from the modem router. You do not need a wifi card..the USB wireless adapter does the same job.
So long as the USB wireless adapter (plugged into your computer) is able to get a good signal from your modem router it will work fine.

yes sure you can, once your router is set up the settings stay saved into it. You can even access it and change it wirelessley howether dont forget to set up wireless security or someone else could hack in and "steal" your router and stop you from using it.
Ill add this q to my watch list n if u need help setting up the security jus add it to the question and ill help.

yea as long as the wireless router thing is plugged into your cable /DSL modem, the internet will still be broadcasted wirelessly, though you may have to change some settings around.

the router will have to be wifi (usually called a hub)
and you will need a wifi card for your pc
either that or a really long ethernet lead
if you are really stuck add details of the router to the Question

From my understanding of your description (I've seen and heard worse, believe me), it doesn't need to be wired to a computer for another PC to access it wirelessly and thence the internet.
