Computer Networking - September 2006

I have cable internet, around 3 Mbps, very decent speed, but I am often not getting this speed on my computers. Right now my connection speed is around 500 Kbps, which is six times below the potential. I have a router and it seems like when I restart it and the cable modem, the speed goes back up. Then after a while it's down again.

Does my problem lie within the router? Is there a setting I could change to fix this?

I have Lynksys G router.

I also have a problem with Yahoo Messenger. I work on a Mac, and have recently installed the new 3.0 beta version of the Messenger, and when I start it, if it sits idle for ten minutes or so, it signs off and then signs back in. It does so two or three times, and then quits altogether. Can it also be because of some router setting?

Thank you if you can help.

I am trying to set up a home network so that I can share the internet . The "host" cpu is set up with the modem from Road Runner. On the "guest" cpu I have a router hooked up. I got it used . All the lights are on in the right places but I can't get online. Does Road Runner have something blocked or am I just doing something wrong? Thanks. (I have the same kind of router that the cable people use for Road Runner.)Maybe something is wrong as far as the host cpu is concerned?

I cannot connect to the internet on the wireless one, please help, I have followed the disc & setup to the letter, do you think I should remove the network connection stuff. I have firewalls on but have allowed the Ip address into the trusted zone. I have 2 desktop pc's that have always worked from the wired router & my change is for a wireless laptop. Please please help, its 2.49am

I think this will be a pretty tough question, if it can be answered. But, I need to know how to update the routing tables on a Linksys BEFSX41 router, or if this is possible at all. I have already spent myself trying to find this out through all the providers. So, now I am trying to use all other options of finding this information out. Any help woudl be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you in advance...
