yes ... on both computers click start, run, and type services.msc /s
Once in there there is something called messenger, by default it is disabled ... on both computers just enable it for start up, or automatic. You will have to re-boot the computers. Then you just go to start, run, type cmd .... brings up your command prompt and type:
net send nameofcomputer then type your message here
then press enter ... it will send it
something else you might could try is hamachi, but that is more software that you have to download and install

If you are talking about having the users of two computers on the same network chat IM style with each other, you still need some kind of a chat program. You can configure MS Instant Messenging to IM between the two PCs without having to go through the Internet.
If you are talking about having the two computers communicate with each other for file sharing, etc, then you do not need any kind of an IM software. Just go into My Network Places, click on View all network computers. You sould be able to see the files on the other computer if they have been shared.

hi, this is a very good question. this is not an answer, just comment. once upon a time networked computers with windows for workgroups back in the pre-win 95 era, had a chatting program built in and similar to a im but only between the computers in the net. it seems to have disappeared. it was a good tool for communication between staff. hope it is still available somewhere in the new win programs. as a small business owner i would prefer if staff had an internal chat program like this and not the im programs that are open to the world.
