Two computers cannot have the same IP address. Therefore you cannot randomly select one, or it may conflict with another computer on the network. You might want to set the computer to obtain it's IP address automatically and hope there's a DHCP server on the network.

If you able to connect to the local network, but not the Internet I can only think of one cause, and that is that they are using a proxy to go to the Internet. This proxy provides to channel to get out to the Internet.

On the machine that works do Internet Explorer Select -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings...

If there is anything on this page transfer it to your other computer.

if your attempt is to get online at work using a remote computer so you can go online without the administrators knowledge, it wont work. the server you have at work creates a log that tells your administrator the ip address of every computer that connects to the Internet and that network and when and where those computers are located. sounds to me like he disabled some of the things you want to do at work and your trying to get around them. WARNING if this is true of you, you can get fired for attempting to bypass a security protocal.

See administrator privileges are required!!!!!!
1)In a local network the ip addresses range of the machines connected should be same then only they can do what you want to.
2)The range means that the machines should have same class of ip address then only sharing of network connection can be done.
3)You can use a proxy software .
4)In windows XP it is possible to make one of the machine as proxy and it can be used to allocate adresses to other machines on its network.
4) if your problem is not solved please buzz me with your question i will try to help ------------> am online now

If this is at home, try this:
go to tools, internet options. Under connectins tab, click on setup to run a wizard, and confirm that you are connecting to the internet through your LAN.
