A LAN connects a group of computers usually within one office and all you really need is a hub or switch.

A WAN connects 2 or more offices using either a private line network (T1 lines, etc.) or using a Virtual Private Network.

and there is also the concept of a Metropolitan Area Network. Which is like a WAN in that is connects 2 or more offices usually within close proximity and can use private fiber lines to make the connections or using WAN links.

A LAN (Local Area Network) is a collection of computers in a given area (like a collection of residents in a neighborhood)

A WAN is a Wide Area Network where you have two or more LAN's connected over a significant distance.

Companies that have offices in two towns would likely have a connection between the two offices - each office would have a LAN and the connection between the offices would be the Wide Area Network link (WAN Link).

Local area networks (LANs) are computer networks ranging in size from a few computers in a single office to hundreds or even thousands of devices spread across several buildings. They function to link computers together and provide shared access to printers, file servers, and other services. LANs in turn may be plugged into larger networks, such as larger LANs or wide area networks (WANs), connecting many computers within an organization to each other and/or to the Internet.

A WAN (wide area network) is, in comparison, not restricted to a geographical location, although it might be confined within the bounds of a state or a country. A WAN connects several LANs, and may be limited to an enterprise (a corporation or an organization) or accessible to the public. The technology is high-speed, and is relatively expensive. The Internet is an example of a worldwide public WAN.
