Working in the IT field for over 5 years, my experiences with different desktops and laptops have been like this:

1)Dell - Best Bang for your buck either home or office, multi purpose
2)Apple - Multimedia, creating/editing websites and music
3)Sony - High end Vaio series Desktops and Laptops
4)HP - For Media Center PC's, recording and broadcasting TV
5)Velocity Micro - great performance for the price
6)Gateway - Educational as well as home use
7)Toshiba - Solid Tecra and Satellite Notebook series
8)IBM/Lenova - Solid for businesses/Servers
9)E-Machines - Budget conscious desktops
10)Falcon Northwest, ABS or Alienware - High end gaming PCs

These manufacturers consistently are top sellers in both home and office. Depending on what you're using it for and your budget constraints, Dell has the most options. If you're into graphics and creating music, Apple. If money isn't an option, the Sony Vaio should do just fine.

OK, Like some other people have said the type of computer you get all depends on what you want. I build ALL my own computers becasue I can get exactly what I want. Also computers made from scratch are much more expandable.. Meaning it easier to add a few more hard drives, cd roms, ram, etc. So look around at all the stores and decide first what you realy want the computer to do.

your local computer shop. Tell them what you want, let them build it. Choose the best monitor you can afford. This 17-inch LCD is just fine.

If you buy a brand you get a whole lot of options you never use.

your local shop will quickly fix anything that fails, without a premium-rate call to a support centre which doesn't support!

110% Apple Mac

Used various brands of PC for over 15 yrs, work with them daily.and my new iMac is the most superior and stylishly simple piece of kit I have owned. They also hold their price for resale and it doesn't cost much more to buy over a similar spec PC

My preference has always been HP. It is the best for multimedia, which is what I use it for the most.
