I'm a student, and I have never bought a laptop before. How cheap is too cheap, and what price range would typically provide all the feautures that a student would need?

I'm in need of a new graphics card and my motherboard with just a regular PCI-Bus slot can't handle any sufficient cards.

I need to know how to do the following:
*How to find the necessary components on my computer for a new motherboard. (i.e. How to find out if I need to buy an AMD or Intel motherboard)
*Where to buy the necessary motherboard I need+service installation.

Thanks, Hedge Witch, My cd drive can play cd's but for some reason it wont copy them,(as you may have gathered I am abit numb skull when it comes to computers,so no offence was taken by your reply),can send cd to writter,but cant get pass that stage,the writting wizard won't let me as it can't read the blank cd.

Maybe you can help. I'm trying to make a database of average cost per item. I want to toss out one (and only one) maximum item and one and only one minimum item. Then I want to find what average is left. (i.e. a certain $1,000,000 item is skewing the table). Can this be done easily in access or do I need to do some VBA coding? I tried using a "tickler file" and do a join, but it deletes every single minimum (or maximum) item.

I am allowed to create as many tables as I need to do this, so space or authority is not a problem.

In my comps system properties the AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Prosessor 3500+ says that it runs at 2.20ghz ,though when loading hl2 lost cost, steams performance warning states that its running at 1.0ghz. The game play is poor but thats due to the nvida geforse 6150le. upgrading to 7300gs just hope its works. Also if i was to go in and out of the system properties the processer reading will change from 2.20ghz to 1.0ghz?? why is that?

This is what I have:

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.00GHz 1.98 GHz
Memory (RAM): 767MB
Video Card: NVidia GeForce FX 5200
Sound: Creative SB Live! Series

I am running Windows Vista. Before I did have Windows XP but I didn't have the actual copy (it was my ex's computer) so upgraded so I could have a copy of it. No bugs so far but my video games run significantly worse with it. Any suggestions that don't involve uninstalling Vista?

im building a new computer. have some stuff already, looking for the following things: this is a challenge for the computer saavy.

i need

a pcie mobo (got a celeron processor, and DDR3 or 4 memory, (must fit the processor AND the memory)),
a good graphics card (worthy of playing BF2142),
a case,
apower supply

DONT NEED:
hard drive or disk drives,
sound card
memory
processor or heat sink

now here's the challenge. all the first stuff... for under $200.

can you do it? and have it all work together fine? provide the links and the total cost. just for suggestions, mind you. not a lazy *** who doesnt wanna do it himself. just some fun for guys out thre who need a challenge. good luck to all!

I have an HP Deskjet 3745 printer that will not print anything. When I click print a window comes up that says "Before you can print, you need to select a printer. If you need to install a printer, either double-click the Add Printer icon or click the Find Printer... button located on the general tab of this dialogue."
Then I'll click Find Printer and type in the name of my printer, HP Deskjet 3745. Then when I click OK a windows comes up that says " Windows cannot connect to the printer. The print spooler service is not running."
So, my question is basically, what do I do? The printer is turned on, paper is in the printer, I have ink, and I think everything is hooked up properly. Please help me out

My brother, in an attempt to keep the family off the computer changed the voltage switch on the back but now that its back to what it should be the computer won't turn on. I'm afraid he may have damaged the power supply. When the on button is pressed nothing at all happens. Any suggestions?

I installed a new graphic card on my computer - XFX 8800 XXX 320 GTS. Then I installed windows XP Pro SP2 after total format of C:\. I installed the latest drivers and I'm getting very low FPS (5-30) in Quake 4, NFS Carbon and other games of similar requirements, at 1024x768, full details. I got Athlon 64 X2 4200, 2 Gb of 1000 Mhz RAM and 450 Chieftec power supply (a good make). What is going on? Why am I getting so poor number of FPS?
