I'm a student, and I have never bought a laptop before. How cheap is too cheap, and what price range would typically provide all the feautures that a student would need?

If you're just doing basic school work and some watching videos and music, that type of stuff, for a PC ~$700 is good (you can go cheaper, but unless you simply can't afford $700 at all, you shouldn't), for a Mac $1100 (as that's as cheap as they go for Macs). If you are doing graphical work, it depends on the graphical work you are doing. For Photoshop or something similar look for ~$1000-1100 on a PC, for a Mac ~$1300. For 3D graphical work, unless you can afford 3K, just get a desktop.

It depends upon what you want to use it for and your budget. If you do the typical things ... e-mail, chat, browse the web and word processing, then even a very expensive P3 laptop would work fine. If you are a power user then, the sky is the limit.

You can buy an old P3 laptop for $350 and use it happily for years. You can add a wifi card for $30. If you move it around and care about the weight and want long battery life then it might cost more and might have to buy a battery. Most of the time you might use it plugged in and not care about the battery.

For school work only? I wouldn't pay more the $500-$550. For gaming and more, the sky is the limit.
