No brand and name brand use the exact same hardware period. It breaks down to the warranty offered by each. Just because you spend lets say $2,000 on a Dell that don't mean your getting a good computer and support.

The brand has nothing to do with the computer quality. The brand is just who assembled the computer. When you are looking for a computer, check for the specs. Usually you would want 512mb RAM or more. Get a good speed processor and enough hard disk space to suit your needs. And remember, don't pay attention to the tech support they offer, because there are plenty of other ways to get support besides through the manufacturer.

Yep, an off brand will often work as well or better than the big name brands. The reason for this is everyone works with the same parts. True, Dell, HP, etc often will have some proprietary parts, they still use the same memory, CPU, etc as everyone else.
However, often the big names will have huge sales on their models. They also often offer much better support and better warranties. And many times, they will package in a printer or other add ons.

Its very rare to get a bad PC nowadays or Laptop come to that.
One or two things to bare in mind.
1. If you are going to be doing basic tasks then you can get away with an Intel Celeron and 512mb RAM.
2. If you want to watch DVD,s edit photos etc. you will need something with a little more backbone like an Intel Centrino and 1024mb (1gb) RAM.
To answer your question outright you are very often "payng for the name" .
I have proved time and time again that budget stuff can be excellent and if you buy new you get at least a years warranty.
Go for it! Hope this has been helpful.

Usually yes! As long as they have the same operating system and processor. No one ever said name brands like Dell were the absolute best PCs!

Actually, when I repair computers I have an easier time fixing damaged machines such as cheap 'eMachines' rather than the Dells or Compaqs. It usually costs less, too.
Personally, I build my own, and they are superior to the build of any commercially built machine. If you're interested, give me a hollar.

Most of the time I find them to work better because they don't come loaded from the factory with software junk you don't want. If you get one from a reputable local store what will give you good service they can be much better.
