anyone know where to get a free download of a basic CAD system just so i can get a feel for it??

Take a look at CadStd Lite v3.5.9. It's available for free download on the following url.

Scroll down to the Graphics sub section (on the left hand side of the page), and click on Drawing, CAD. You'll need to scroll down the page a little before you see it.

There's also a program called VectorEngineer, which you can find at the second url.

I'm sure if you type "Freeware CAD download" into any search engine you'll get some more results.
