Sometimes I get excellent, sometimes low

How far away you are from the hub.
What's between you and the hub, like walls, and what are they made of.
The exact direction your antenna is pointed (if you have an external antenna, wiggle it, otherwise move the computer)
What other signals are flying thru the air at the moment causing interference.

It all depends on the location. Sometimes when walls are in the way this could happen, or it depends on how far the receiver is from the router. if you put some aluminum foil behind it, it will boost your signal.

I really dont know, but i have the same situation the only thing that helps me is getting closer to the router on the desktop... otherwise i dont know what to do, but you could also get a range booster
