I have taken in my 99 Ply Voy SE to dealership for spark knocking. They replaced two vaccuum hoses and told me I need to have fuel injectors and throttle body cleaned for a grand total of about $320. I had them replace the hoses. I feel it may be the timing and they are just trying to get more money out of me. It spark knocks under light acceleration constantly. It only goes aways when I let completely off the gas or accelerate quickly. I have put two bottles of fuel systems cleaner in my gas tank in two separate fill ups. This has not helped. The van has 95,000 miles on it and runs fine otherwise.

So I took it to Midas. The guys said he thought it sounded like the exhaust pipe needed to be replaced, for about $149. Once they looked though, he revised his estimate up to $1200 for a "cracked manifold."

I don't have the money, so he told me to drive home and keep the car parked until I could afford the repair.

So my questions are: what's a manifold? Why so expensive? Why can't I drive it? Would it be dangerous?

I guess basically I want to know if I'm being ripped off... or if I can drive it awhile (in emergencies, for instance) while I save up for the repair. Thanks!!!!!

Hi, my 02 Ford Escape's steering wheel has been sqeeking very bad when I turn it to the right. I took it in, and the Ford mechanic just called to tell me he has to replace both outer tire rod ends and align the front, and this will cost about 400.
This seems like a lot!
Does he have to replace both?
Please let me know if this price seems fair....

The car has always run on the cool side, and out of nowhere the temp needle starts pegging 120, the radiator/overflow is full and looks decent with no leaks ... any ideas here guys (or girls)? Temp is 65 F. outside. Could it be the thermostat?

I don't know why, but my dad's car (the one I'm using now) has a seperate 12 CD changer in the trunk instead of the front. It's a seperate area in the trunk where I can eject it, and a box comes out, and I can put my 12 CDs in there. It was fine I guess since it was 12 CDs, so I just packed my CDs in there and it was working fine.. until..

It got STUCK. As far as I remember, I was changing from CDs to CDs when it happend. I couldn't make up my mind, so I guess I ended up changing too quickly for the machine to comprehend and got stuck.

What can I do? My dad (since I know nothing about cars) is procrastinating about the situation, and I told him about it a few months ago. I'm really going crazy driving from place to place without anything good to listen to. I AT LEAST want to get my CDs out of there even if it means the CD player in the car remains broken.

Can anyone help? Tips? Advice?

My "door ajar" light is coming on, with the consequent problem that the dome light stays on for varying lengths of time while driving. I thought it used to be an obvious plunger switch somewhere in the door frame but I can't seem to find one. Anyone know where it is/how to fix it?

I have a 95 saturn SL1, and last friday it over heated, but I noticed it was low on coolant and water so I added both, and it did fine but now the light on the dash by the temp gage is flashing you know the little water sign but it's not reading that it's hot. The gage is staying in the middle. So can it be that the thermostat is going out. Also like 1-2 weeks befor it startd doing this I had someone flush the radiator and they said my car had the green coolant in it but after flushing it they refilled it with the red kind. Can that be the problem? Sorry I know nothing about cars. Please only give me answers if you know about this problem. Thanks. Oh and by the way yes I'm still driving it, since it's not actually over heating and it's not leaking out the water or coolant.

The transmission is shot in my S320 Mercedes-Benz and I want to replace it before I try to sell the car. I live in central virginia and a somewhat trustworthy mechanic here quoted a price for replacing the transmission and for labor, but admitted the owner of the shop wants to charge about 600 more for the transmission than what he purchased it for. He said if I could find my own transmission it would be considerably cheaper to have it replaced- and they would do the labor at the shop. Where can I find rebuilt/used transmissions for this car? Do I need a transmission specific to the model as well as the make? I literally have no idea where to begin. Help!

I have a 95 bonneville with a 3800 series II V6....I had knocking in the engine. So i replaced the piston bearings. The knocking went away, but not completely. When the engine is running at idle, no knocking. But when i go to accelerate, there is knocking, but not loud.the other thing is when the engine reaches normal temp, the oil pressure gauge needle gets real close to the red zone, but the engine does not sound like its gonna die nor does it knock...please help

I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee and I think my water pump might be going bad. It is not over heating but more and ofter I keep finding a small puddle of coolant under my car right underneath where the water pump would be. Does anyone have any idea if this could be a bad water pump or something else?

I was recently in a small accident where i damaged the front corner of my civic and was also hit at my rear passenger side wheel. The wheel was apparently not damaged. Since I've had it back there is a small vibration at higher speeds in the steering wheel only. When I brake there is a very noticeable vibration especially at highspeeds but also at as low as 60km/hr. There is no pull in the car so I don't suspect an alignment problem. I had no issues before the accident in mid feb and had my rotors ground down in November which got rid of a small brake pulse back then. How can this be related to my accident because it must be! However I need this to be proven to my insurance company that it was accident related. Could it be that the tires are off balance? The rear suspension was replaced but I can only feel it in the steering wheel. Could the locking bolts or part of the braking system be loose and cause this much of a problem? Braking still feels tight. Any suggestions?

OK, granted, my car is old and tired. You might even say geriatric. It is a well worn 95 Pontiac Sunfire GT.

Yesterday I was running on empty. I have been for a couple days now (work is only 1.5 miles from home), but yesterday was the first day the "check gauges" light came on.

I had a little work to do before I could buy gas (go get my deposits back on $12 worth of Diet Coke cans) so I drove down to the market to do that. My needle stayed below empty.

Then when I got back in the car to drive to the gas station, it said 1/4 tank. I wasn't on a hill or anything.

This is where it gets weird. I started driving to the gas station, about three miles away. Over the eight or nine minues it took me to go those 3 miles, my needle climbed very steadily to full and past! It said it had a totally full tank! This is BEFORE I put my $12 of gas in!!!

After I pumped the four and some-odd gallons, it read fine, and has since. What gives?
