Does any one know when a cambelt breaks on a v/astra sport 1.8 1995/6 if the engine is safe or whether it bends the valves etc.
Many thanx

As long as the car wasn't driven too far after the cambelt went, it should be ok.

Like all these things, it's possible if you're an experienced mechanic with access to garage facilities, but it's not worth paying someone else to do it. You're looking at four figures in labour cost alone, before you've even bought your new engine, gearbox, brakes, suspension etc. You should be able to sell your car and buy a 16v Astra for way less than it'll cost you to change the engine. Isn't the Mk2 Astra a 90bhp engine anyway? Same one as they used in the Mk2 Cavvy, the 1.3 was a 75bhp unit and the 1.6 was 90bhp.

This is defiantly not a safe engine the valves will touch if the cam belt breaks. If you are thinking of replacing it fit a cambelt kit this will include tensioner rollers. The reason the belts break is the tensioner rollers fail in most cases of broken belts.

i own a shop, and it is an interference engine if my source is right , i cant find out a lot on it,but it does say its an interference engine which means it will bend a valve on it,good luck with it.

This one, as far as I recall, is NOT a "safe" engine.
Sorry.
