Not directly on the engine.
If the engine is overheating, keep the engine running to keep the oil circulating. Help the engine cool down by slowly watering the radiator fins. Cold water is ok as long as you use small amounts. If you are using a garden hose, attached a sprinkler set to fine mist or spray. Aim on the front grille about 1-2 feet away spray in short bursts of 1-2 seconds every 10-20secs until engine temps drop.

Well, yes you can, but only if the motor is running. To pour cold water into the radiator when the motor isn't running can create a crack in the motor or the head or both.
It is advisable to allow the car to cool down before attempting to add water to it. And this can take 1/2 an hour or 45 minutes. Even then, it is advisable to crank up the engine with the radiator cap off and add the water to it slowly and allow the fluid to circulate throughout the motor.
When you have filled the radiator up to the overflow hole, replace the cap.
If it is extremely low of coolant, you need to determine where it is escaping, and make the necessary repairs, or you will be doing this over and over again.

Shut the car off and you can fill the overheating radiator slowly , so the water warms up before it hits the engine There is a slight risk of damage to the hot engine cracking around the water jackets if the water is ice cold, but if you let it slowly fill through the hot radiator It should be fine.

Absolutely NOT! Do not even try to remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. If you do, there is a possibility of serious injury from steam or scalding hot water coming out of the radiator.
Turn the engine off and wait until the radiator is cool to the touch before you attempt to open the cap. Then you may add water, or better yet, a water/antifreeze mix to the radiator until it is full.

you can do it, but eventually you will create a crack in the engine from going hot to cold. i did it with an old toyota i had. now, my car was only worth about $500, so i didnt care whether or not it blew up, i was going to run it into the ground, then buy a new one. if you dont care about your car, and have the same plan i did, go for it. if you arent driving a piece of crap you plan on throwing away, you had better see a mechanic.

You can but I wouldn't advise adding anything until the engine cools down. The water will shoot out of the top of the rad and could burn you bad. Wait an hour then try.
