The only thing that only a main dealer should always carry out is reprogramming the immobiliser to recognise a new key transponder.

Anything mechanical should be within the abilities of any reputable, well-equipped garage.

However, not all garages are the same - some are more capable and trustworthy than others - so use someone you trust, or who has a good reputation locally. Ask friends and family for a recommendation.

There is nothing like only a main dealer should carry out. Then again all garages are not the same. It also depends on what type of car you got and where are you live.

Not all garages are the same, but there is no reason you would 'have' to go to the dealer to have this work done.

You would want to check around and find a garage that does good work for a fair price, however.

Also, just because a garage is at the dealer that sells the cars new, does not mean they are the best at what they do.

Not really. I would however recommend that you found a reputable garage either through friends or family, maybe one that specialises in your make of car. Their hourly labour charges should also be less than a main dealer. Additionally the recent 'Block Exemption Rule' means that warranty servicing can now be carried out by non-frachaised garages as long as they use approved quality service parts without invalidating your manufacturer's warranty.

Depends on the value of the car, and the competence of the garage. A main dealer will have access to a better parts supply, so less chance of pattern bits being used, and some bits like electronics, safety systems better done by someone who really understands them, ie a manufacturer trained mechanic
