I have a 95 saturn SL1, and last friday it over heated, but I noticed it was low on coolant and water so I added both, and it did fine but now the light on the dash by the temp gage is flashing you know the little water sign but it's not reading that it's hot. The gage is staying in the middle. So can it be that the thermostat is going out. Also like 1-2 weeks befor it startd doing this I had someone flush the radiator and they said my car had the green coolant in it but after flushing it they refilled it with the red kind. Can that be the problem? Sorry I know nothing about cars. Please only give me answers if you know about this problem. Thanks. Oh and by the way yes I'm still driving it, since it's not actually over heating and it's not leaking out the water or coolant.

Make sure your radiator coolant overflow bottle is filled up to the "Hot" line when the engine is warm. Are you sure that little light isn't the windshield washer fluid low light? The only thing I can see that would drive that light to come on is if your overflow bottle is low, or the coolant sensor doesn't detect any coolant. It may be possible that your coolant system needs to be bled of any air bubbles, now that you had the coolant replaced (the orange coolant is great). There's usually a bleeder valve (nipple) located on the highest point of your cooling system, (usually where the top radiator house connects to the engine). With the car warm and running, slowly unscrew this nipple until coolant starts to seep out, then close it tight. Air in your coolant system can cause your engine to run hot, and even overheat. Hope this helps.

Yes it's ok to change from the green to the red but only when you do an engine flush..that's fine..what you may have here is what they call and air lock..So you need to "burp" the system..let the car cool and then remove the cap on the rad or in some cases the resevoir that holds the anti-freeze .then start the car and let it idle till it gets warm enough that the water pump kicks in and let it run for another ten or fifteen minutes after wards..that way the air lock will pass..if this doesn't work you may need to remove the anti-freeze and refill it to remove the air lock..good luck..and one question.."are you getting heat" if you are getting heat then that means your thermostat is working fine..and if the engine is not over heating then your thermostat and water pump are working fine..
