does anyone know a probable cause for an astra only able to drive in second gear without me dropping the gearbox, suggestions are ok but i feel the gearbox may have to come out. i hope not, so any sdvice most welcome.

First thing to check out is the gear linkage alignment, some times after driving the linkage between the gear stick and the gear box can move resulting in difficulties getting the car in to gear.

hi there, the first thing i would check is the gear linkage, on the astras they're prown to go, i did one about a month ago and you've got to get them spot on otherwise they wont let you get all the gears, check that the linkage as come loose, hope this helps

I'd agree, they're renowed for the linkage going up the spout. Hopfully that's it, easy to fix, but needs doing accurately.

check the oil in the gear box first
