The car has always run on the cool side, and out of nowhere the temp needle starts pegging 120, the radiator/overflow is full and looks decent with no leaks ... any ideas here guys (or girls)? Temp is 65 F. outside. Could it be the thermostat?

The thermost is always a suspect in overheating problems. They go through thousands of cycles and do wear out. I would change the stat.
