Maintenance & Repairs - October 2006

Cv Joints struts, steering rack have all been replaced. It's an 03 Impala. One shop said my subframe is cracked and another shop said bad bushings. I had my tranny rebuilt in Oct of 05. Wouldn't they have noticed if my subframe was cracked when they worked on the tranny? And if the subframe were cracked wouldn't the problems start right after an accident? Or does it take a long time?

The info center console doesn't come on. You know, that digital info thing that tells you the miles to service? It doesn't come on anymore. Also, my stereo won't work. Funny thing is, since those things are off, I cannot control the heat/AC so my heat shuts on and off by itself and I can't control it.

I thought it was a fuse, but I checked the fuse box and all of them are good. I am afraid to take it to a mechanic since I don't know exactly what's wrong, they might try to get over on me.

If any of you know exactly what's wrong or at least have an idea, please let me know so I can at least go to an auto shop and pretend I know what I'm talking about!! Thanks you guys!!

My wife's Ford Escort suddenly drops to 3rd gear from a complete stop. Only seems to happen when the lights are on. I find this really strange. It is a 4speed Automatic. Is there some electrical switch on the tranny connected to the headlight switch or something? p.s. it wasn't always like this, it also won't switch into the overdrive gear.

its a 78' 401 jeep wagoneer v8 and i dont which wire goes where on the solenoid it has an I and an S on the solenoid i need to know where the coil wire hooks up and ignition wire and theres a big glass fuse that sits in a ceramic fuse holder it has a red wire attached to one end and the other with i think is a black or red wire on the other side i dont know how you hook it up. and this truck has a 79' oldsmobile cutlass ls 4 door body on top of a 72' jeep wagonner frame . i need an answer from somebody who knows how to wire a jeep to start

I read that even the front O2 sensors are under the car in a 96 ford taurus so i decided to go to a mechanic (especially since the car was smoking today). He said 2 cylinders out of 6 dont have enough compression and i need a new engine. Is it true theres no other way to repair the cylinders except by replacing/rebuilding the engine?

i bought a 2000 dodge intrepid and it has manufacturing defects with mostly all the 2.7 liter engines blowing up, due to oil causing sludge to build up inside. i got a 4200 dollar loan and i have to keep full coverage, ive got no money for a new engine and that is all i can do to fix the car the mechanic says. What in the world do i do im expecting a baby in january. please send advice

first the car stoped while driving,it could be started after some time,i have changed the coils,replaced the fuel pump with a second hand one,now it does not stop but it chocks like cutting off .i was advised to replace the sensers or and replace the fuel pump with a new one.

My father was against Pennzoil, and just the other day when we went to get our new truck servied, my boyfriend said NO PENNZOIL... and that's all they had. He then Chevron is the kind he wants. I have no idea what is being put in mine (although I know not pennzoil from my daddy's warning years ago)... How do you figure it out, and what is the difference?

Hello I have a 1991 Jeep choerokee lorado with the inline 6. I went out and started it to warm up yesterday and came out 10-15 min later and it was shut off... and now i can not get it to start... It does have spark and I think its getting fule but i shot some starting fluid in it to check and still no fire, pop, or anything. got a new crank sensor and still nada, pulled it up on to top dead center of #1 and made sure the rotor was on #1 to check to see if cam chain jumped and its matching up still has about 100 lbs of compresson.
NOW WHAT? IM LOST?

I own a 97' Chevrolet...and my check engine light just went on.

I have 85,000 miles on it. I got an oil change to get it inspected and everything came out alright.

Should I go to a shop and check something in particular with it?

The engine sounds great. The engine is clean. The battery works fine. The oil change is new. And the darn light is still on.

What could be wrong with it?

And what should I watch out for?

Also: My cooling system turned holographic and I was recommended to get that fixed before the winter. Could that be a reason for the engine light to go on?

Does anyone know how much it would cost to fix the bands that are on my motor? My car is acting like it wants to cut off when it is idle and when i put my foot on the gas it seems to hesitate and then it will go once i give it more gas. Can anyone give an idea of what it is and how much it might cost?

on the size a car oil filter is? besides the size for the area and space for it to fit in, Does the size of the oil filter matter, as in getting a bigger one than the engine has because of more filtering power?
