My wife's Ford Escort suddenly drops to 3rd gear from a complete stop. Only seems to happen when the lights are on. I find this really strange. It is a 4speed Automatic. Is there some electrical switch on the tranny connected to the headlight switch or something? p.s. it wasn't always like this, it also won't switch into the overdrive gear.

This is NOT an uncommon failure for this little car.
There have been many instances of this particular failure noted on the ASE technician's website.
There are a couple of ground wires between the engine, frame/chassis and the body that gather corrosion and the resistance at that junction changes enough for the PCM to seek another electrical route, usually through the light circuit.
There is also a power wire routed from the engine bay through the bulkhead at the firewall, driver's side beneath the brake chamber that manages to cause electrical disruption with the PCM. This is one of those things that we (techs) can spend hours finding, and then the bill comes due and the customer is wondering why he had to pay $600.00 to repair a loose wire.

If you have the ability, use your volt meter and do some VOLTAGE-DROP tests at all of the ground connections both under the hood and under the dash, as well as at the PCM and its connectors.

Good Luck

feels like the starter. a undesirable starter will kill a sparkling battery. Get a sparkling starter and you'll be positive. This has took place to me with each motor vehicle I even have had. i got here upon that salvage yards have extra inexpensive starters. I wasted plenty funds on different factors in the previous I discovered that the clicking became actually a undesirable starter. wish this enables!
