STOP throwing money at the little car. Or at least make it "smart" money.
If it is behaving poorly as caused by power train management (fuel, spark, etc) then the "Check Engine" light is coming on.
Retrieve the Diagnostic Trouble Codes from the car's computer (PCM) and address the problem.
You may not have an OBD II code reader or scanner, but you can go to a discount auto parts store (Auto Zone, Kragen, Schucks, O'Reilley's, Advanced etc.) and ask if they would retrieve them for you. Most of them will do it at no cost in the hopes that you will purchase the repair parts from them.
When you get the codes, write them down for reference.
You can go here------>

http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/index.php

...and learn a great deal about the codes you have.
PLEASE NOTE-------> the codes represent a failure identified by the PCM in a circuit or system monitored by the PCM. It DOES NOT necessarily represent a specific component failure.
EXAMPLE---->
If the code you get is "P0174, System too lean, bank1", this COULD represent a failing oxygen sensor, but can also mean that the fuel filter is restricted, or that there is a vacuum leak, or a failing fuel pressure regulator, of even a MAP or MAF sensor just slightly out of range. Diagnose the circuit according to the trouble tree for the car.
Use a repair manual for the proper diagnostic and repair procedures.
You can locate them at the parts house or a book store for < $20.00.
You can go to the library in the REFERENCE section and use theirs at no cost.
Also available at most libraries is the EXCELLENT resources ALLDATA and Mitchell On-Demand, both professional level computer-based data.
If all of this is inconvenient or unavailable, you can go here------->

...and receive the same professional level repair and diagnostic procedures at YOUR computer for a modest annual subscription fee.

Good Luck
