My starter makes a noise like an air gun??
We took it off to find nothing visible for problems and also bench tested came out good
Ring gear is also good

When you try to start it ,,sounds like the starter is turning but not kicking in.
The ring gear does have a shinny spot where the starter drive was trying to kick in.??

Why does the bench test come out good but when installed it seems not to kick in all the way.

it always work fine til just recently

The engine is a 2 cyl. Detroit Diesel in a Bull Dozer.

I have a 99 GMC Sierra, sometimes it wont start but then after a few minutes it will. They told me it is the passlock system cause the SECURITY light stays on while I drive. The system is around $600 to fix, does anyone know how to disengage it without spending alot of cash?

I've got a set of 2 2-ton jack stands and a floor jack so I can work on my car (a smaller car . . . Chevy Cavalier), and I was thinking that there are times when it would be really handy to have the whole car off the ground, say for example when you want to change your oil and fuel filter.

Do you think it'd be safe to put the car up on 4 jack stands?

Thanks!

The original motor was a 283 small block V-8. My question is, the original fuel pump is of the mechanical type it's mounted on the side of the 283 motor. Now that I'm putting in the ZZ-3 crate motor, is there a electric fuel pump that I use or what!! Help!!!

My car is a 93 Geo Prizm with about 141,000 miles on it. I was driving down the road, pressing on the gas, and it suddenly started making a low grumbly sound and would not accelerate. I coasted it into a parking lot and now it turns on fine, but whenever I press on the gas it doesn't move. I am afraid it may be the transmission, and if it is is it worth the money to get it repaired?

2000 Ford Mustang, 3.0L V6 engine - I am having a "valve job" done, due to a large oil leak through one of the valve guides. The mechanic who took the heads off (to send them to a machine shop for the actual work) says the Piston to Cylinder clearance is too big, and I should replace the engine - though prior to removing the heads all six cylinders compression tested at 175PSI. He has not yet gotten in there with a feeler gauge and actually measured the gap, but I have told him I'm not buying an engine until he does.

I own a 1993 Nissan Altima and I've just noticed that my car rattles when accelerating, but stops when I reach around 25mph. What could this be and what would the estimate be on how much it would it cost to fix?

I've heard this because they must remove the engine to get to the nessesary parts and if you have it done anywhere but the dealership, your warrenty will be voided?

We live in CA. My 16 year old daughter took her car (hers by possesion, not legally) in for an "oil change". She walked out with a $300.00 bill charged to my credit card (she is an authorized user). I was out of town, out of cell range, so she could not get a hold of me. This was a place that we have used for over 6 years on all of our vehicles including 2 other teenage drivers and cars. They have stated that a 16 yr old can sign a contract for service on a vehicle in California? The car is not registered under her name, it is under ours. I have searched and cannot find any code that states this fact. Ethically I convinced them that a 16 yr old versus a knowledgable adult mechanic should have resulted in an oil change with an estimate for the additional services to be reviewed by her parents. They have agreed to refund, but I am curious if there is such a statue?

I brought my car to the mechanic today and he said i needed an induction service, spark plugs and wires. Isn't this the same as a tune up? I'd just never heard the phrase "induction service" before.

I drained the fluid from the transmission pan and don't know how to put it back in. I have read that you fill it through the over fill? But, how do you do that? Can I make a pump, and how? Does the truck need to be idleing during the entire procedure or just when checking the overflow?

P.S. Hubby will be doing most of the work ;)
