I brought my car to the mechanic today and he said i needed an induction service, spark plugs and wires. Isn't this the same as a tune up? I'd just never heard the phrase "induction service" before.

Induction service is the process of cleaning the induction portion of the air intake system of the engine. The intake manifold, the upper plenum and the throttle body are all chemically cleaned to remove hydrocarbon deposits that hinder the proper flow of air into the engine.
It has become for many shops an integral part of a tune-up, but it is not a tune-up per se.
If there are indications of deposits, then it is wise to remove them to restore proper performance and economy.

Good Luck

I've never heard that term either. But I don't think it could be the same as a tune-up. Spark plugs and wires are only part of a tune-up. A tune-up also includes checking belts & fluid levels, and other adjustments. See the list in the link below.
