2000 Ford Mustang, 3.0L V6 engine - I am having a "valve job" done, due to a large oil leak through one of the valve guides. The mechanic who took the heads off (to send them to a machine shop for the actual work) says the Piston to Cylinder clearance is too big, and I should replace the engine - though prior to removing the heads all six cylinders compression tested at 175PSI. He has not yet gotten in there with a feeler gauge and actually measured the gap, but I have told him I'm not buying an engine until he does.

You cant measure the wear from the top with pistons and rings installed.check for a ridge in the top of the bore and piston wobble.

Tell him to do the head job for you, and you don't want to take it up the **** for a new motor. He's smoking crack.

As someone else posted, you can't tell by the top of the piston. If compression was good, you are good to go.
