My starter makes a noise like an air gun??
We took it off to find nothing visible for problems and also bench tested came out good
Ring gear is also good

When you try to start it ,,sounds like the starter is turning but not kicking in.
The ring gear does have a shinny spot where the starter drive was trying to kick in.??

Why does the bench test come out good but when installed it seems not to kick in all the way.

it always work fine til just recently

The engine is a 2 cyl. Detroit Diesel in a Bull Dozer.

I also try the hammer and this did not work

Would I be looking to check the starter itself ,, the drive,,or the bendix
It has an external solenoid

Hello,

have you tried the coast mechanism and the guide fork which drives the rotor into the gear crown of the flywheel? You said the rotor revs up (you hear it screaming), but it doesn't drive the flywheel. The solenoid must be working, otherwise the rotor doesn't rev up (Think it over: the bendix pulls, this moves the fork, which slowly merges the rotor into the flywheel gear, normally. At the end of merging when the bendix is fully in 'ON' position, the bendix gives the supply to the rotor which starts to rev.). If I were you, I would check if that fork is in correct position and if it's still able to move longitudinal correctly (not broken or deformed).

Regards

The air gun sound is obviously the bendix attempting to kick in, but is not kicking in all the way...Replace the bendix and it will be ok...That is usually the problem.

I agree, the Bendix isn't engaging the starter. Try replacing it.

It's unanimous. The bendix isn't meshing, if nothing else you should hear it hit some teeth.

Check the flywheel for missing teeth.
