I took my car in for an oil change & tire rotation & to look at squeeky brakes on my 04 NIssan Altima. Dealer said I need new brakes. Front & Back...runs about $480. I told them no to that. I took the car home & as I'm driving I notice the squeeking is gone. Do you think new brakes are needed or was he looking for more money? I have 25K miles on it.

Does it have a regular timing belt that needs to be changed, or does it have one of those chain timing belts that never needs to be changed. Just curious because I know if it is a regular one you should have it changed at 90,000 miles and I just want to know if I need to check about getting it changed? Thanks!

My 2000 Taurus reads empty but I can only put 10 gallons in the tank (16 gal tank total). This means there is 6 gallons remaining when the gauge is registering Empty. Is there any solution to this problem that is an easy fix?

everytime I start the truck for the first time, the transmission will be in first gear til 35-40 MPH, and you can hear the RPMs are real high. After driving for a while, it shifts somewhat normally. from complete stop to go, it will shift, then it sounds like it whines or whirls real high for a second or two after it already shifted, like it has to pop out of gear. The fluids are fine. is this normal?

I have always used dish soap whenever i've washed cars in my own driveway...but then recently I read that its not good for the paint to use dish soap (which are gentle on the hands...) so how come I cant wash my car with it?

ok... this is what happened. i was driving on the freeway and out of nowhere there was a huge bumper in front of me lying sideways. i couldn't switch lane in time so i ran the whole bumper over. it was a pretty hard impact... under my car. it didn't hit my front bumper or anything... just the bottom of my car. i knew something wasn't right, and good thing i didn't live that far away from the freeway where it happened. when i got home, i could see a trail of oil and where i stopped, there was a puddle of brownish/reddish oil coming out of the bottom of the car. it kept dripping out. it smelled like engine oil stuff you know? so something broke under my car after i ran over the bumper. so my question is:

what oil could it possibly be?
is this critical or could it be fixed?
what could be broken?
how much do you think it would cost to fix?

thanks a lot for your help... anybody! this is one of the first major "accidents" i had so now i'm shaking and traumatized... any help is appreciated

Will there be a negative effect in braking performance if you drill holes in your brake rotors just like those on ventilated discs on performance vehicles? Drilling will be done by a professional lathesman.

I have a 1999 Honda Civic Ex 5 spd Manual where the clutch, i think, is beginning to wear (i came to this conclusion because when my car idles it makes this scratchy noise until i hold the clutch down and it quiets down, could it be the bearings or the plates? either way i'm gonna get the whole clutch system replace next week, but today when i was starting my car, it had trouble starting...could the flywheel effect the starting of my car? it doesn't sound like my starter has problems..Maybe once i get the clutch replace along with the bearings and plates and also resurfacing the flywheel, my car will be okay again..what do you guys think?

My internal locking system on my car doors makes a weird noise whenever I lock/unlock it, it is getting worse and wondered if anyone would have an idea as to how much it would cost to fix? My car is an automatic 1995 rover 416 but runs really well, I only have this problem with the locking system. Is it worth keeping the car? or will it cost me more than the car is worth?

I have a 95' ford escort and it only has 93,000 miles on it. When i first got the car it ran great but then one day me and my husband took it to Jiffy Lube to get the oil changed and we left and on our way home the check engine light came on. We pulled over and turned the car off and then it wouldn't start back, finally it did and we have been having so much trouble out of now. If we go somewhere it dies almost everytime. First the radio will go off and then it will start running really rough and the turn signals won't even come on the if we stop it just dies. When you try to start it back when you turn the key over it doesn't do anything sometimes it makes a clicking noise. I don't know what is wrong with it but we took it to auto zone and they did a battery and altenater check and said everything was fine so i have no clue. I would really appreciate all the help i can get. THANK You....

It happens at speed above 10 mph and seems to come from the rear of the vehicle. It sounds like a tea kettle and slightly increases in pitch with greater speed. The sound remains when coasting at speed in neutral with the engine shut off. Thanks for your help.

My brakes squeak while im driving even though i dont have my foot on the brake. When i do step on the brakes the squeaking stops. Other machanics tell me that this is normal but i cant believe that for an 02' GMC YUKON. And the squeak is just getting worse. also ever time i have to stop hard theres a vibration in the brake, I know this has to do with ABS but sometimes im not even stopping that hard when it does this. One more thing,, im going through two tanks of gas a week, I only drive about 45 miles a day. ive tripped it and im only getting about 250 miles per tank. ive been told my manifold?needs adjusting, is this what i need and how much would all this stuff cost? Im in Kennesaw, Ga. anyone know of a machanic i can trust. Please help me out im kinda strapped for cash but i know i need this done. thanks for your time and effort that you put into answering this for me.

Okay, please nobody answer with 'go see a mechanic, dummy' I know this and i am going tomorrow morning, but just wanted to hear what some people would say. First, I constantly put coolant in the reserve, and minutes later my light comes on. My car never overheats, and the temperature gauge usually stays right at normal. It started out as me putting fluid in and a week later the light comes on, now it comes on instantaniously, and stays on. Yesterday for the first time, the temperature gauge went almost all the way up, then slowly came back down. I will find out tomorrow exactly what is wrong, but i have a feeling i am goin to be taken advantage of because i am a girl and kind of an idiot, and i just wanted some peoples opinions, maybe this happened to you before.

My 1996 Corvette LT4 6-speed has developed an annoying rattle in the shifter. The car has 21,000 miles and has had no problems since new. Is there an easy fix aside from installing a new shifter? I've read that some new shifters rattle and I have been spoiled all these years. Is the shifter install a DIY project or should I let my mechanic handle the job? Aside from the rattle, the car runs as smooth as glass, even at high speed. Also, the rattle occurs mainly in 1st and 2nd gear. Fifth and 6th are quiet. The car shifts great and the clutch is smooth with no slipping? Any ideas.
