The lowest gear is just that, a very low gear ratio to give maximum torque but little speed. Even when you are in D or drive, you start out in low, shift to 2nd, and then drive. Some transmissions will have a 3rd and then go into drive. Low is used to creep out of mud or snow or to pull a steep grade, for example.
Most manufactures suggest gearing down from drive to 2nd and letting the engine compression break the car till using the brakes only at the last to come to a controlled stop and hold the car still . This saves wear and tear on the brakes, definitely on front disk breaks. The gear down method is also used when going down a steep hill. That is only gearing down one gear, in an emergency, gearing all the way down will quickly bring the car to a stop, along with breaking and avoiding the slide that can occur if just slamming on the breaks. There is also a over-drive that will kick in when in drive and have reached highway speed in some cases. There is also a passing gear that kicks in when, while in drive, you punch the accelerator hard.

D- the gears shift from 1 to 4
3 - the gear moves only up to 3
2- the gears moves only up to 2
these lower gears are usually used when you need more power such as in up hills or when you want sudden acceleration, other than that you can just stick with D most of the time

D is Automatic for Drive. Setting the gear at 3,2,or1, forces your transmission onto that gear, like manual transmissions used to. The only time you might need these are during steep hills when you want to force the transmission into a lower gear, thus more power, but less speed.

The 3, 2, and 1 gears are also useful when towing something heavy, so our transmission won't keep downshifting constantly.
