My left brake light is out and I don't want to pay someone labor for something that I could probably do myself because I'm willing to learn. It's messy work but it saves money. :)

It has received a Tune Up earlier this year, due to a mis-fire in the third cylinder. I had that fixed.

All the fluids have been flushed and replenished.

I have a 2001 Toyota 4Runner with nearly 80,000 miles on it. I have a good friend, and he and his dad are car experts. Should I let them do the tune up, go to my Toyota dealership, or to some shop around town?

The truck has around 180,000 miles on it.
Is this a reliable truck?
What are the most common problems for this truck?
What would I expect in maintainence for this truck?
How much more could it last without major repars?
(Any comments about experiences with this truck would be greatly appreciated)

A relative wants to give me her car that she hasn't driven for about 4 years. Should I be pulling the plugs first and pouring in something ? Adding something to the old gas ? etc.

Thanks for any advice ... Tom

I just posted this question, but I have new info.

For astarters, the day before it finally died, I noticed that twice that day I would turn my key to start my car and it would pause, then maybe 1/2 a second later it would start. The next day, nothin.

Dead.

I just went outside to see what's up, the connections seem all good. The alternator is new and the battery is charged ok, but when I go start it it does nothing. No clicks, nothing. I was advised to maybe "tap" the starter with a wrench, but is that possible without lifting the car? I can't even tell where the starter is in the Haynes manual. Any help would be seriously appreciated. Any ideas?

I took my car in for a service (1999 Vauxhall Tigra) and I cannot believe the quote they have given me to carry out repairs. Are there any mechanics out there who can tell me whether a) they are completely overcharging me and b) whether someone who fixes cars would buy this from me with these faults and how much for!

OK this is the list of things they said was wrong;
1) Excessive shudder whe moving from standstill possible clutch. advised strip for investigation.
2) Car excessively smoking when revved, requires cylinder head gasket.
3) Advised timing belt and spark plugs due to age and mileage if not been done.
4) Back box baffles ex loose.
5) 2 rear shockers leaking
6) Excessive leak at power steering rack and power steering pump leaking.
7) Excessive oil leak at sump gasket.
Their quote for INVESTIGATING the gasket and gearbox, replacing the spark plugs, changing the timing belt and blackbox, 2 new rear shock absorbers, steering rack and pump and sump gasket was
£1948.

I was recently in a really bad accident and my car is now in the shop. I went by yesterday and they were still working on it. when I looked at the parts they were replacing, they were all differerent colors and it looked like they chopped up another cars parts and stuck it on my car. My question is ...is this safe, honest, and will you be able to tell the car has been chopped up? Also, they have to repaint all of these parts including the entire right side and the trunk....how long does that process take?

Never had problem until today. Have to press clutch all the way in so safety device will allow ignition to start car. Suddenly today may have to press clutch several times before ignition will fire. Is there an easy solution to this problem, possibly a switch ar fuse or something?
