Sounds like either your tranny or fuel injection.

I agree with the others about Fuel (espcailly if the fuel filter has never been changed) and ignition related issues but my money is on MAF sensor.. seen a few of these do just like you stated

Oxygen sensor possibly or fuel injector. Try adding some fuel injector cleaner at your next fill-up.

thats not a chicks vehicle. whoever says it fairly is incorrect because of the fact back interior the 60s mercury cougars have been used for racing and an excellent kind of of the racers have been adult males. black additionally makes it seem greater manly lol

It is in the fuel system, either filter of pump. Try the filter first

It could be any # of things. blocked fuel line, water in your tank, tranny is going out. I have a 92 Cougar. (If your heater core ever goes out, sell it! don't try to replace it. trust me)

It could be clogged fuel injectors or maybe even your catalytic convertor. Also chack your O2 sensor.

spark plugs.. air filter.. fuel filter.. fuel pump filter.. O2 sensor.. fuel injectors.. fuel pump.. check them in that order... may just need a tune up
