A relative wants to give me her car that she hasn't driven for about 4 years. Should I be pulling the plugs first and pouring in something ? Adding something to the old gas ? etc.

Thanks for any advice ... Tom

Question 1. Was the air filter on for the time in storage.
2. Does the engine still turn over.
3. Does the engine still have spark.
4. Change the oil and filter.
5. Drain the gas tank and put in fresh.
6. Check tires and brakes. You may need to replace rubber hoses and calipers or wheel cylinders, master cylinder and brake pads.
7. Replace or recharge battery.
There could be other minor things but that should get it running.

first drain the gas tank, water most likely condensed in the gas. add fresh gas. purge the fuel line. pull the plugs and squirt a bit of oil into each cylinder and HAND turn the engine by turning the fan or getting a large socket wrench and turning the crankshaft by the large bolt in front. change the oil and filter, check the air cleaner for critters. charge the battery or get a new one. check the tranny fluid if automatic. then good luck!!! if it don't crank too smoothly DON'T keep trying to start it you could damage the engine.

all the above answers are good I would drain all fluids {oil gas water/antifreeze} and put fresh in with new fuel filter and oil filters before yu go and try to crank it use some wd40 or other lub like it to spray in each cyl after removing the plugs and let set for a couple of hours then turn it over by hand use a socket on the front pulley bolt to turn it over to make sure it will turn then put the plugs back in fill with fresh gas and a new fuel filter and try to start it up. take a close look at any wiring to make sure nothing has eaten on it like rats before you even think about turning the key this happened to me with a vw bug aand caught it on fire check it all.

I would drain all oil and gas to be replaced with fresh. A bit of wd40 in each cylinder would be a good idea.Tranny and radiator should be drained and cleaned. Not a job for the faint of heart but well worth it for a free car

had a toyota that sat for 7 years and started fine after this...
1. change oil and filter.. check all fluids and fill as needed
2. fuel additive(octane booster and at least 1/4 tank fresh gas
3. disconnect distributor coil wire and turn engine over for a few seconds to get oil into upper engine
4. reconnect coil wire and start engine.. check oil pressure.. should get reading in a few seconds..
5. shut off engine.. check for leaks.. if no leaks, enjoy your new car
thats about it..
