Digital display on radio of my 2000 Ford Focus is blinking and fading in and out. Do I just have to have a "chip" replaced or the entire system?

try changing the fuse for it. that might work and if it doesnt work then it might be something in the wiring so dont just assume the radio is bad

Entire unit. About $175-200 from a salvage yard. About $400 exchanged at a Ford dealer

Looks like the front display had been damaged or hit, better of replace the radio cd,you can find a decent one for under $100.

if its a lcd screen the crystals may have been damaged or exposed to extreme heat or cold..couldnt tell you exact problem but could just be the display, and you may not have to replace all of it but the dealer probably will anyway
