I just posted this question, but I have new info.

For astarters, the day before it finally died, I noticed that twice that day I would turn my key to start my car and it would pause, then maybe 1/2 a second later it would start. The next day, nothin.

Dead.

I just went outside to see what's up, the connections seem all good. The alternator is new and the battery is charged ok, but when I go start it it does nothing. No clicks, nothing. I was advised to maybe "tap" the starter with a wrench, but is that possible without lifting the car? I can't even tell where the starter is in the Haynes manual. Any help would be seriously appreciated. Any ideas?

does your ignition key have a "chip" in it? if so it may be the wire in the ignition cylinder ( the thing you put your key in) How to tell. jack up the car. get under it. the starter is on the passenger side of the engine. ther is a large cable going to it from the battery. it should have power at all times ( test with test light) the small cable next to it should be purple or red. it shoulld hve power when someone turns the key. Is your car auto or manual? the clutch kill switch could be bad. give more details or email me at russellp73@gmail.com. If you have no power to the small wire under any circumstances then you have to dig deeper. It can get complicated but I need more info on your car.

DO NOT TAP THE SOLENOID as you will break it!! Tap the casing of the starter. You will need to have someone turn the ignition key to the start position while you tap the starter. If the car starts you need to replace the starter as it has a dead spot in the armature. if this doesn't work check to see if you have power/ 12 volts to the main battery connection at the starter/ solenoid and also check to see if you have power to the starter actuation wire while someone turns the key to the start position. If you have no power/ 12 volts you need to check the wires to main power or to the ignition switch

actually what you will be tapping is the solenoid which is attached to the starter, and they are right this does work, you may also have a problem in the switch(key switch)
