My 2000 Taurus reads empty but I can only put 10 gallons in the tank (16 gal tank total). This means there is 6 gallons remaining when the gauge is registering Empty. Is there any solution to this problem that is an easy fix?

Also, there isn't exactly 6 gallons left on empty. Most manufacturers give you a good 2 gallons when the car is on empty to allow you to get to a gas station before the car shuts down.

You still have an issue with the remaining 4-5 gallons, though. I'm guessing it's a problem with the float or a wire with slack, not electrical.

Assuming the other gauges work OK, I would do the simple first.
Make sure the ground is good. A simple ohm-meter test should
reveal whether the sender is working right but I don't have the
read-out specs close at hand. Looks as tho the worst-case
would be the sender itself. It's in the tank but generally not too
difficult to swap out.

It could be an inaccuracy with the sender in the fuel tank or your fuel tank could have sludge in it from poor quality fuel.
Drain the tank using the drain plug see if you have sludge if not remove the sender and test it.

Most of the time it is just the fuel sending unit. But if you replace the sender , you may just as well replace the pump too. They are located in the fuel tank.
