I have a 1999 Honda Civic Ex 5 spd Manual where the clutch, i think, is beginning to wear (i came to this conclusion because when my car idles it makes this scratchy noise until i hold the clutch down and it quiets down, could it be the bearings or the plates? either way i'm gonna get the whole clutch system replace next week, but today when i was starting my car, it had trouble starting...could the flywheel effect the starting of my car? it doesn't sound like my starter has problems..Maybe once i get the clutch replace along with the bearings and plates and also resurfacing the flywheel, my car will be okay again..what do you guys think?

most likely the clutch being worn out caused the starting problem is so don't wait to have it replaced do it now before you cause any unnessesary problems

The sound while idling is definitely your clutch-release bearing's. Get it replaced soon. As for the Clutch, Will have to take it out it to know of it's condition.

Your starting is irrelevant to the flywheel as far as normal starting is concerned. Check your Starter motor for possible signs of seizures/bearing wears, if it's the starter that's not turning..

Boy these folks are full of crazy suggestions....let's just say that your throwout bearing is bad. Not serious, but it should be taken care of. You should go ahead and buy a clutch too. So, in review.....buy a clutch, throwout bearing, pilot bearing and an installation pilot (guide, it will make things a lot easier. The pressure plate is probably fine.

You should inspect the flywheel while the clutch is off if any of teeth are messed up or missing replace it to.

motor mount could be the scratchy noise and stop when clutch is down.
you may have a flat spot in flywheel and save money by remembering that .

a bad flywheel CAN cause your car not to start if some of the teeth are broken or worn out.

If the fly wheel was bad then it would make quite a racket when the starter engaged....sounds like you have 2 separate problems.
