It happens at speed above 10 mph and seems to come from the rear of the vehicle. It sounds like a tea kettle and slightly increases in pitch with greater speed. The sound remains when coasting at speed in neutral with the engine shut off. Thanks for your help.

you've got a bearing problem- it may be axle bearings, carrier bearings, or thrust bearing, but it's a bearing- check the axle bearings first and don't drive it until you find the problem- if the thing comes apart on you you could wind up with a serious problem- like a loss of control and accident kind of problem.

I had something similar to this happen today in my 95 s-10. although while i was driving i heard a high pitched screech, and thought it was a scooter or smoething beside me, as i got to the lights i realized it was me. I pulled off the road immediatly and shut the truck down but the noise (from under the hood) continued loudly and did not seem to be quieting down. I smelt a very faint smoke smell, but deffinatly not a belt coming from under the hood on the passenger side. i quckly grabbed my tools and disconnected the battery trying to prevent any sort of fire and was shocked fairly well in doing so. When I bought the truck it was running rough and had a multitude of different plugs and wires. Just 4 days ago i had all plugs and wires replaced along with the distributor, a new fuel filter and a new oil filter. I have driven the truck every day with no noticiable differences until about 30 seconds before the screeching began my airbag light came on, on the dash. I would be really thankful if someone could point me in the right direction as I have never in my life heard a vehicle make this sound. Thanks in advance. Kay

If the pitch increases with speed, then sounds like may be a wheel bearing. If it is pretty much static with only slight increase with speed, on a truck that old, could be wind whistling threw something, hole in the bed, what ever.

it sounds like you could be having a problem with the rear differential, most likely the gears are worn and may need to be replaced
