A newer car will cost more to buy, but less to maintain, and will last longer. An older car will cost a lot less to buy, but more expensive maintenance.
Is there an optimum age of car where you'll get best value for money?

I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am with just over 96,000 miles on it. The transmission is supposedly rebuilt by Cottman transmission but has crapped out after two years. The gears slip between first and second but after second gear it typically hits the others. The alternator is three years old and there are some modification pieces installed. Kelly Blue Book estimates it's value at $1,195 which is what I'd aim to get at CarMax. Should I go with the trade-in or is it possible to make more than 1200 dollars by selling certain parts. The labor on a tear-down is not a problem and would be free of charge.

We need a safe, nice new car because we have an eight month old son. So I'm looking to make extra money for a down payment.

If you know resale values on these car parts and rarities, if any, please let me know so that I can either get rid of this car or start tearing her apart. Thanks.

It is a 1999 Ford Taurus. Almost 120,000 miles, needs transmission. Just did new oil filter/pump and new rack-and-pinion job. Good AC, power windows/locks, needs some body work, paint job. In 'fair' condition. I paid $3,500 for it two years ago, but it has definitely seen better days.

I have a 1995 Ford escort LX and its a four door, four cylinder with pw, pl and the AC works and is cold. It has 132,000 miles on it, and it has a minor muffler problem, could be fixed easily. How much do you think that my car would be worth?

I just bought a car that was sold to me as 2002/02 registered but when i insured it today and put the number plate in, the vehicle description was automatically filled with : MINI COOPER 1.6I (01 ON) AUTO. What does the "(01 ON)" means? Is it because it's actually a 2001 car?

i always hear people saying that the minute the front tires of a new car hit the main rd the car starts to lose value( anywhere between 1-5,000 dollars) is this true...so here is my question if this is true.. why would i want to be anywhere near invoice price on a car at the lot that has at least 20 miles on it from test driving..point in case we looked at a nissan armada a few weeks ago (42,000) it had 20 miles on it before we took it out to test drive when we came back it was at 32(yeah we drove all over it gave a great ride) but when we went to talk pricing they wouldnt budge on price(found this same problem at three nissan dealers in the area)..and this particuler one is the one i want (with the 32 miles and all)..any answers

fixed so in two weeks this car has to go back to be worked on again . what can I do about this . I think this car was bad from the beginning and they should give me another car of the same value but they say I will lose three thousand dollars just for driving it off the lot.

My parents are looking to get a new car and they cant decide towards the two. I like the acura because it looks slick and it a big car with as much safety features (from what I see) as the Volvo. My dad doesnt really car but my mom wants the Volvo because it is traditionally safe. Which would you guys suggest as the best buy? They will be driving the car and 98% of the time it will be my dad. They want a good luxury car but the reason safety is so important is mom my got into a moderate crash a year ago and is affraid to drive but like I said I dont see much difference between the two in safety.
