If you can't sell it privately with the bad engine, trade it for wholesale at a dealership. dealers just pass it onto an auction house anyway so they won't care as much about eh issues.

Why did the engine only last 9 months?

So what did you do to the engine? Replacing it is extreme unless you did something extreme to it - like running it without oil for instance //or running it without coolant overheating the block in a second instance.///or revving the pi$$ out of it
NO ENGINE will take that punishment and survive.
Nothing wrong with the car. More to do with knowing how to care for a motor...know the limitations of a motor....otherwise you will be doing this again and again and losing money every time.
But you don't want a tongue lashing, so...look at the problem an figure out either how to hide it(if it is burning blue, there are oil additives)...if it is knocking - find out what they are and reduce them so that the potential buyers won't notice. Car lots spend alot of time and money making the car smell good and look good and clean and the interior stuff works so it feeels like a new vehicle so the customer pays little attention to the smoke from the tailpipe.

Yeah, those cars are junk, you can set it aside on the street for a reasonable price, post it on http://www.autotrader.com and you can put it in the newspaper.
