Ain't gonna happen anytime in the next couple of hundred years.
Look, for easily extracted and easily refined oil, there is limited supply and increasing demand. We are seeing that today. Very soon, in the next couple of decades, unless new oil sources like ANWR are tapped, world demand will exceed the ability to supply this oil.
However, looking farther into the future, oil can come from other sources. Canada has vast tar sands that they are now mining and refining into oil, because prices have increased to make a profit. They've got enough for 100 years of supply at current world usage levels.
Gas can be made from coal. The USA is the Saudi Arabia of coal.
Gas can be made from oil shale. The USA is the Saudi Arabia of oil shale.
Then there are also bio fuels. While Ethanol isn't going to be our savior due to the fact that it yields only slightly more energy than it takes to make it, biodiesel looks promising. You can run diesel engines on vegetable oil if properly configured. Electric cars certainly are feasible for many people.
As oil prices go up because of increased demand and limited output of conventional oil, these other sources will gradually come on line because getting oil and gas from them will become economically feasible.
So the future will have increased oil prices, and perhaps some periods of shortage while new oil supplies come on line. But none of this is going to end.
However it would be in our country's best interest to start encouraging fuel efficiency and alternative sources of fuel now, rather than wait for the crisis in supply.
