I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am with just over 96,000 miles on it. The transmission is supposedly rebuilt by Cottman transmission but has crapped out after two years. The gears slip between first and second but after second gear it typically hits the others. The alternator is three years old and there are some modification pieces installed. Kelly Blue Book estimates it's value at $1,195 which is what I'd aim to get at CarMax. Should I go with the trade-in or is it possible to make more than 1200 dollars by selling certain parts. The labor on a tear-down is not a problem and would be free of charge.

We need a safe, nice new car because we have an eight month old son. So I'm looking to make extra money for a down payment.

If you know resale values on these car parts and rarities, if any, please let me know so that I can either get rid of this car or start tearing her apart. Thanks.

Better to sell it as a whole vehicle than to parts it out piece by piece unless you like to look at a junk car for a while. Try to trade it in at a dealer when they have those "push, pull, drag" sales. Maybe advertise it on Craigslist.com auto section.

Try to sell it to someone who fixes cars as a hobby. If you place an ad in the local paper, say that you have a "handyman's special".There maybe someone who will buy it.Good luck with it anyway.
